Territorial scope of insurance guarantees
When we talk about the territorial scope of the cover contracted for any type of insurance, we are referring to the geographical demarcation in which its safeguards apply.
When taking out an insurance policy, the coverage applies only to damage occurring within the territorial scope that the insurer has defined in the general conditions of the contract. This delimitation may vary according to the specific guarantee.
Some guarantees will only be valid in Spain, others may extend to European or even worldwide. These differences between insurers can be very relevant.
Let us look at some examples that may help to better understand this issue:
Example 1: In a home insurance policy, one of the guarantees may be the cover for "...".spoliation outside the home". This cover protects, up to a financial limit, money or personal objects that may be stolen by violence or intimidation outside your home. However, while some insurers limit this coverage only to Spain, others extend it worldwide.
Example 2: In motor insurance, the guarantee of assistance may have different territorial scopes depending on what it covers. For example, towing of the vehicle may be covered only in Europe, while assistance to persons (such as repatriation or urgent medical care) may be covered worldwide.
This last example shows how even within the same warranty there can be different scopes of coverage depending on the type of service.
Therefore, details such as these can make a big difference when taking out any insurance policy. Especially in those where the geographical scope of coverage is more relevant, such as vehicle, travel, health, life, death, boat, accident, transport, etc. insurance.
